For the crisis-hit Linz SPÖ, it is a sign of cohesion: With 95.5 percent, party members elected the executive vice mayor Dietmar Prammer as chairman and top candidate in the upcoming mayoral election, with a turnout of 44.3 percent.

With this result, which was presented today at an extraordinary district party conference in the Pichling People’s House, Prammer has now officially succeeded the fallen Klaus Luger at the top of the party. Whether Prammer will succeed him as mayor will probably only be decided in the runoff election on January 26th.
Difficult choice
In his speech, Prammer openly stated that the election was not a “gmahde Wiesn”. At least he should have the support of the party. In any case, the approximately 200 delegates gave a standing ovation today for “Didi”, who is supposed to save the SPÖ’s claim to leadership in Linz. He wanted to continue Linz’s “success story” with “the red handwriting,” said Prammer in his speech. We have clear ideas for the future of the city.
Errors in integration policy
The newly crowned SPÖ leader mentioned the fight against inflation, securing the industrial location and social security as priorities. Prammer struck a new note on integration policy. It was a mistake for the SPÖ to downplay problems with certain groups. “We have to protect everyone in Linz, we owe it to everyone,” said Prammer, especially those with a migrant background who would be discredited by a few.
Also Prammer for medical scholarships
Today, Prammer has largely failed to take any concrete measures, with the exception of scholarships for medical students who, in return, would undertake to work in Linz for a certain period of time. FP candidate Michael Raml recently brought up a similar suggestion. Prammer wants the federal government to provide 150 additional police officers for Linz, a long-standing SP demand.
