US suspends commercial flights to China in response to a similar move by Beijing

Due to this automatic interruption, the Chinese authorities canceled flights from the American companies American, Delta and United Airlines because passengers who had tested negative for Covid before taking off, tested positive after being examined upon arrival in China.

The US Department of Transportation announced the suspension late yesterday stating that “actions that harm the operations of Delta, American and United (…) are adverse to the public interest and warrant proportionate corrective action by the department,” reported the AFP news agency.

“US airlines, which are following all Chinese pre-boarding and in-flight regulations, should not be penalized if, upon arrival, passengers later test positive for COVID-19,” the Transportation Department said.

The 44 flights suspended by Washington are operated by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Xiamen Airlines and are scheduled between January 30 and March 29.

The decision was made three weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Last Christmas, the United States canceled 454 flights on the eve of Christmas Eve.

“The national spike in Omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our crews,” United Airlines explained in a circular collected by CNN.

In the Asian giant, two airlines – China Eastern and Air China – canceled more than 660 flights on the same dates, to which were added identical measures by other minor Chinese airlines.

Last weekend, after registering the first community contagion of the Omicron variant, China suspended thousands of flights and increased testing.
