In Kiev, a 500-meter Ukrainian flag was stretched in honor of the Day of Unity

Residents of Kiev stretched a 500 m long Ukrainian flag in the city center in honor of the Day of Unity, which is celebrated on January 22. This is reported by the correspondent of “Izvestia”.

The footage shows that people lined up in a human chain and hold a huge canvas in their hands. The demonstration stretched from Sofia Square to Mikhailovskaya Square.

The city also hosts a procession in memory of those who died on the Maidan during the protests in 2014. People hold flags of Ukraine and photographs of the dead, flowers and candles.

The Day of Conciliarity is dedicated to the reunification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic into a single state.

The day before, Ukrainians celebrated the Day of Dignity and Freedom, a public holiday that citizens call the anniversary of the Euromaidan.

In November 2013, activists gathered in Kiev for protests demanding the signing of an association with the European Union, these events were called “Euromaidan” and led to a coup d’état and the overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. On the main Kiev square – the Maidan – radicals clashed with the security forces, which led to losses on both sides.

In February 2014, snipers opened fire on protesters and police on the Maidan, killing 53 people. The leaders of the protesters blamed the current authorities for the incident. However, the participants in the events, mercenaries from Georgia, said that the order to shoot was given by the head of the “Maidan self-defense” Andrei Parubiy. According to them, they were promised $5,000 for completing the task.

Former Interior Minister of Ukraine Vitaliy Zakharchenko later said that three groups of snipers were operating on the Maidan. The first is activists who later confessed to everything themselves; the second – Georgian snipers; little is known about the third.
