She was formally arrested after appearing in court. The crime of insulting the president carries a sentence of one to four years in prison in Turkey.
“An alleged journalist openly insults our president on a television channel with no other goal than to spread hate”Erdogan spokesman Fahrettin Altun said on Twitter. “I condemn this arrogance, this immorality in the strongest possible terms. This is not only immoral, it is also irresponsible,” he added.
However, the Turkish journalists’ union called Kabas’s arrest “a serious attack on freedom of expression”.
Human rights groups often accuse Turkey of undermining press freedom by detaining journalists and shutting down critical media outlets, especially after Erdogan survived a coup attempt in July 2016.
The organization Reporters Without Borders ranked Turkey 153rd out of 180 countries in its press freedom index.
