“You can say that crack has arrived in almost every major city in Germany. And that is very worrying,” says Heino Stöver from the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. Until several years ago there was actually only a scene in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Hanover. That was local.
“But for the past seven or eight years we have noticed in many other cities that crack consumption has taken hold there, albeit with varying intensity,” says the professor of social science addiction research – be it in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Bremen, Berlin or Munich. This is then also noticeable in the appearance of the cities: “Open scenes with great signs of impoverishment are emerging again. This can no longer be overlooked in many places.” For example, crack is considered the dominant drug in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel.

The fact that crack is so widespread also has to do with the huge supply. “We are experiencing a glut of cocaine,” said the expert. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, around 43 tons of cocaine were seized last year, more than twice as much as the previous year. Crack is mixed, boiled cocaine that you can smoke – and it gets you excited extremely quickly. Because the drug is quickly addictive, it is considered particularly dangerous.
“It’s a potentiation of the cocaine rush. The drug has enormous addictive potential – and that’s what makes it so dangerous,” says Stöver. In his opinion, drug consumption rooms need to be set up in more cities. “The scene must be reconsidered and offers of help must be made.” The most important thing is to find contact with people.
