Armenian President Sarkissian resigns

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has resigned. This is stated in a statement published on January 23.

“I thought for a very long time and after almost four years of active work, I decided to resign from the post of President of Armenia. This is absolutely not an emotional decision and comes from a certain logic, ”the document says.

According to Sargsyan, “the president does not have the necessary tools to influence the fundamental processes of domestic and foreign policy in the current difficult period for the country and the nation.”

He has served as head of state since April 9, 2018. In Armenia, the president is the head of state, the guarantor of the independence, territorial integrity and security of the country. The president also oversees the implementation of the constitution. Sargsyan’s term of office was to end in 2025.

According to the Constitution of the country, the President submits his resignation to the National Assembly. The resignation is considered accepted from the moment of its promulgation in the manner prescribed by law. Until the new head of state takes office, his duties are performed by the chairman of the parliament.

In June 2021, parliamentary elections were held in Armenia. Then the Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, according to the CEC, won 53.91% of the vote. Former President Robert Kocharyan’s “Armenia” (“Hayastan”) bloc gained 21.9%. The “I have the honor” bloc of the former Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan followed with 5.22%.

Some parties, including the “I have the Honor” bloc, the “Armenia” bloc and the “Awakening” and “Armenian Motherland” parties, did not recognize the election results and filed lawsuits with the Constitutional Court of Armenia, however, on July 17, the Constitutional Court of the republic recognized the victory of Pashinyan’s party and rejected the lawsuits .

On August 2, Sargsyan appointed Pashinyan as prime minister. After that, on September 26, the Armenian parliament approved the program of the new government.
