Timo Grbesa says he had been wanting to travel around the world for a long time: “After the pandemic, I just had to get away.” After six months of preparation, the Welser got on his bike in the spring of 2023 and set off for Italy. Almost 20 months later, the 26-year-old returned to Austria last Sunday – he had traveled to 22 countries and cycled 20,000 kilometers.
After Italy he moved across the Balkans to Greece, from there across Turkey to the Iranian border. “I actually wanted to continue there, but then the war broke out between Israel and Palestine,” says Grbesa.
Hardly any experience on the bike
Because onward travel to Asia would have been difficult on other routes, Grbesa decided to travel to Sri Lanka by plane. In his luggage he had a backpack with the essentials and a bike. He chose the latter because it was the cheapest and most reliable means of transport. “Before that, the last time I sat on a bike was when I was 13,” says Grbesa, who is self-employed in the real estate and investment sector.
