Local staff can leave the embassy if they wish and US citizens residing in Ukraine “should now consider” leaving the country on commercial flights or other means of transportation, the official statement added.
US and Russian diplomats made no major progress in Friday’s talks, and Moscow has been massing troops on the border with its neighbor.
On Sunday, Britain has accused the Kremlin of trying to install a pro-Russian leader in Kiev.
The State Department said it is authorizing the “voluntary departure of directly contracted US employees and ordered the departure of eligible family members from the Kiev embassy due to the continuing threat of Russian military action.”
“US citizens in Ukraine should consider departing now using commercial transportation options or other available private transportation options,” he added.
