A 62-year-old woman from Klagenfurt was walking alone on her bicycle along the sidewalk of Waaggasse around 11:30 a.m. when she was suddenly stabbed from behind.
The alleged perpetrator, a 28-year-old man from Armenia, attacked the woman with a twelve centimeter long kitchen knife and stabbed the woman lying on the sidewalk several times with full force.
When a passer-by (62) heard the loud screams of the woman from Klagenfurt, he rushed to her aid and threw himself on the armed Armenian. After hitting the perpetrator a number of times, he finally managed to pry him away from his victim, saving the woman’s life.
Immediately after the crime, the initially unknown perpetrator fled on foot. According to the police department in Klagenfurt, the woman may have been a “random victim”, the perpetrator did not even know the woman from Klagenfurt. According to police spokeswoman Lisa Sandrieser, there was “no connection between the perpetrator and the victim.”

Mental state of emergency
After the police launched a large-scale manhunt for the young man, the Armenian turned himself in at around 2 p.m. The alleged murder weapon, the kitchen knife, was secured in the 28-year-old’s apartment. The force of the punctures actually bent the twelve centimeter long blade.
After being questioned, the man was taken to the Klagenfurt prison. The reasons for the act were initially unknown. The perpetrator also admitted that he did not know the victim. The public prosecutor said the man was in a mental state of emergency. The influence of drugs or alcohol was ruled out.
The entire attack could be seen on the surveillance video of a neighboring shop in downtown Klagenfurt. After the arrival of the rescue workers, the 62-year-old victim should have got up on his own, the rescue brought the seriously injured woman to the Klagenfurt clinic.
The woman underwent emergency surgery on Saturday and has been in intensive care since then. Nathalie Trost, spokeswoman for the Klagenfurt Clinic, said yesterday when asked by OÖN: “The woman is seriously injured, but her state of health is still stable.” (cape)
