The cities seem to have benefited more and generated more sustainability than the small towns. Projects have been initiated in Bad Ischl and Gmunden, and the city bosses are correspondingly satisfied. However, some local leaders doubt whether everything has always reached the population. And sustainability often has to do with money.
“The Capital of Culture more than met expectations; for me it was the best year so far as mayor,” concluded Ines Schiller (SPÖ), Mayor of Bad Ischl. “Some projects will be continued and many exhibitions will remain. The Capital of Culture also opened the door for many projects.” As an example, she cites the completely reorganized city museum or the renovation of the Lehárvilla. The dilapidated Lehár Theater is now being renovated, probably costing around ten million euros, and is expected to shine in new splendor for its 200th birthday in 2027. The preliminary planning is almost finished, said Schiller, and the design planning and cost estimates are now being examined by the state and federal government. “In addition to all of this, one should not forget the large international network that has been created,” she emphasizes, “a separate team is already working on the successor structure.”
