After two years of the pandemic, young people are thirsty for offers, says Dominik Samassa, chairman of the “Junges Theater Wels” association, which has several theater projects and workshops on speech and breathing techniques, stage technology and dance theater in the program this year. “We have the approach that we plan this year as if there were no pandemic, we can still react to current developments,” says Samassa, who studies theater and film studies in Vienna. The last two years have been “mixed” for the club, with cancellations, postponements and rare opportunities to perform. Members of the Young Theater performed, among other things, in the play “Belimited relationship-capable” in autumn for the opening of the Welser Stadttheater, which had already been planned for 2020.
The Junges Theater Wels is also involved in the program for this year’s anniversary “800 years of the city of Wels”. The artistic director of the Junges Theater, Gabriele-Kirsten Lutz, is implementing the music theater show “Plus Einhunder – Wels in 100 Years” with Helmut Schmidinger. The city had called on the citizens to submit ideas by the end of January of what catfish could look like in a hundred years. From the submissions, the two design a theater production with professionals and amateurs. There will be a public casting in March. The premiere will take place on November 4th at the Stadttheater Greif.
After the pandemic also led to the cancellation of the planned performances “Tanztheater – Loose Connection” in autumn, there will be a resumption in July. And in the fall, a project for children between the ages of six and ten will begin. The Wels theater teacher Ina Schuller will then start with the children’s theater “Courage”.
The theater group emerged 15 years ago from the Protestant youth work, so rehearsals and performances also take place in the Cordatushaus in Wels. The association was founded five years ago. In order to inspire children and young people for the theater, there are also regular performances for schools.
