Soon there will be signs for railway bridge

“Tell me where the signs are…”: Many users of the new railway bridge, which was opened to traffic at the end of August, were left at a loss at its ends. As is well known, there are no signs at the entrances and exits.

As if that wasn’t enough, the approach to the bridge on the Linz side in the direction of the A7 has high potential to be overlooked in the flowing traffic and ultimately missed, criticism also came from drivers who know the area.

The many suggestions and complaints regarding information boards were used by Bernhard Baier, Deputy Mayor responsible for transport (he took over the department after the elections in autumn), to have a check made on what “useful signage” could look like.

The result: four signs in the vicinity of the new railway bridge, two each on Freistädter Straße and on Untere Donaulände. The information boards, which were not originally planned, are to be installed at the beginning of February. Baier’s predecessor, Deputy Mayor Markus Hein (FP) – he has withdrawn from city politics for health reasons – had reportedly seen no need to put up signs due to the lack of complaints. Sometimes because he said that driving according to signs in the Navi era was “a bit old-school”.

Traffic light circuits optimized

And what does Baier say about that? “Signposts in a moderate form are part of a bridge crossing. The street space is not overloaded with the current solution.” In addition to the bridge signs, another one will be attached to better indicate the ban on turning left into Ferihumerstraße (more on this on the right).

In the past, the crossing situation at the entrances and exits of the bridge had also provided material for discussion. On the Linz side, there has already been an optimization of the traffic light circuits, more are in preparation (keyword second right turn lane), so Baier. “Improvements are possible, but you always have to look at the overall load, we can only move within the framework that the Donaulände can absorb.” And it’s no secret that traffic jams are commonplace there.

Incidentally, there is also news about the new bridge apart from car traffic: the digital bike counting station announced for there is already in operation. (jp)
