NATO member states want to strengthen defenses in Eastern Europe

The troops of NATO-States would be put on standby and more warships and combat aircraft would be sent to the east, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday.

“The NATO will take all necessary measures to protect and defend our allies. This also includes strengthening the eastern part of our alliance,” Stoltenberg said. Ukraine is not a NATO-Member, but several of its western neighbors are.

A Russian politician had previously stressed that Moscow would “react appropriately” if the US sent more soldiers to Eastern Europe and the Baltic States. Deputy Andrei Kartapolov is the chairman of the Defense Committee of the Russian Parliament. He was reacting to a report by the New York Times, according to which US soldiers, warships and aircraft would be sent to the country NATO-Allies in the room.
