The new dog ownership law for Upper Austria comes into force on December 1st. This was preceded by a number of serious dog attacks, especially those in Naarn (Perg district) on October 2, 2023: A 60-year-old jogger was attacked and bitten to death by three American Staffordshire Terriers.

The law brings more obligations and training for owners of large dogs, special breeds (“list dogs”) and conspicuous dogs. A dog register will also be introduced, which will record, among other things, incidents and bans on keeping dogs. Municipalities are given more control over suspicious dogs. The six-hour technical knowledge course that owners must provide evidence of is retained. What else applies from December 1st? The most important regulations at a glance.
