Vienna Airport wants to make the decision for or against building the third runway in 2026. Environmental organizations and citizens’ initiatives have been mobilizing against the planned slope for years. “We have a lot of work ahead of us in the next 12 months,” said Vienna Airport board member Julian Jäger on Monday at the business journalists’ club in Vienna.

The airport is currently waiting for a decision from the Administrative Court (VwGH) on the project. As part of a complaint from Vienna Airport, the VwGH is currently examining whether the postponement for the building permit from 2033 to 2030, which was shortened by the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG), is legally valid. The airport applied for a postponement of the construction of the third runway in 2023 and achieved a deadline extension of 9.5 years for expansion stage 1.

An environmental organization and four citizens’ initiatives had lodged a complaint against the Lower Austrian state government’s decision to extend the deadline, which is why the BVwG looked into the matter and shortened the extension to 6.5 years. Environmentalists fear more climate-damaging emissions from air traffic with a third runway in Vienna-Schwechat.

“Decision to be carefully considered”

Airport board member Günther Ofner described it as “grotesque” that the length of the appeal proceedings before the BVwG was already included in the postponement. He expects the Administrative Court to follow the airport’s legal opinion. For Ofner, the decision as to whether the third runway should be built in Vienna-Schwechat is “a decision that must be carefully considered.” This also has to be “coordinated with the supervisory board”. “The general conditions have to be right,” said Ofner in the business journalists’ club.
