Maldonado, considered a doyenne of journalism in the border city Tijuana, was assaulted Sunday night when she was inside her vehicle, the Baja California state prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
“Upon arrival at the scene of the events, a woman was found dead, who was identified as Lourdes Maldonado López, according to the official documents in her possession, who was working as a journalist,” he added.
Another source who asked not to be identified said that the communicator was enrolled in a protection mechanism for local government reporters, which included sporadic police security at her home.
Live broadcasts on social networks on Sunday night showed a strong security operation in the area where the journalist’s body was found.

Lourdes Maldonado worked as a correspondent in Tijuana starting in the 1990s for a Mexican media outlet.
