The US decision to evacuate embassy staff from Ukraine is strange. This was announced on Monday, January 24, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
“Their information and political agenda is strange, stupid,” she said on the air of the Ekho Moskvy radio station, answering a question whether this evacuation was connected with the meeting of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, which took place on January 21 in Geneva.
Zakharova recalled that recently The New York Times wrote about the alleged evacuation of employees of the Russian embassy in Ukraine, but this turned out to be untrue, it works as usual.
“Yes, indeed, before the New Year, relatives of diplomats, families left, some stayed, some left. But, firstly, this happens in general, especially before the New Year, and, secondly, the situation there in relation to our RZU has been heating up for more than a year, and we talked about it literally every month, ”she said.
A day earlier, the State Department ordered the voluntary departure of part of the American diplomatic staff and members of the families of diplomats from the territory of Ukraine. The department stressed that citizens of the United States who are now in Ukraine should also consider leaving.
On the same day, the US State Department issued a recommendation advising American citizens not to travel to Russia due to “continued tensions” on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
The representative of the State Department also pointed out that in the event of an escalation of tension in Ukraine, the United States authorities will not be able to take their citizens out of the country. As specified, Moscow “may create a false pretext for the invasion of Ukraine.”
As the American political scientist Bruce Marks told Izvestia, the evacuation of the embassy staff is part of the hysteria around the Russian “invasion”. He noted that Russia “will not commit such a risky and thoughtless act.”
On January 22, The New York Times also published an article stating that Russia allegedly began to evacuate its diplomats from Ukraine. At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation denied this information.
On January 15, United States Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland announced that Washington had prepared 18 different scenarios for restrictive measures in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, the details of which she refused to disclose.
In turn, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia does not show military escalation against Ukraine. According to him, these are allegations by the United States, which did not provide evidence for the allegations.
