On Sunday, “the assembly of M5S, which is the one with the largest number, widely agreed that the objective is to preserve the continuity of government action because we cannot ignore the fact that there are families, companies, citizens who look at us and cannot think that we should stop first at the Quirinal and then for a new government,” declared Giuseppe Conte entering the Chamber of Deputies for the summit with Democratic Party (PD) y Free and Equal (LEU).
During the counting of the votes, the President of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, will only read the elector’s last name when the ballot bears only this indication or when, reporting other annotations, the person to whom the vote is attributed is unambiguously identifiable.
“Whatever happens, we will support the return to the polls also because Draghi’s mandate, in our opinion, is linked to that of Sergio Mattarella. We aim for a government that has a cohesive program and a clear popular mandate,” said the president of the Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, in the assembly with her major voters, from where she also launched Carlo Nordio’s candidacy and reiterated the unavailability of a new term of Mattarella.
However, the secretary of the PD, Enrico Letta, think about moving the waters: in today’s meeting with Matteo Salvini, leader of the League (right), he will ask for a clear position on Mario Draghi.
“It represented an extraordinary resource for Italy and the task of all of us is to preserve it,” he says.
Draghi is one of the hypotheses on the table. Not only that, the PD leader is also ready to open the Mattarella chapter with Salvini.
“He would give his best, the ideal and perfect solution,” he says.
After leaving the scene Silvio Berlusconi, the cards on the right are not on the table yet. However, Salvini appears adamant on two points: “Removing Draghi from Chigi Palace is dangerous” and the centrist senator “Pier Ferdinando Casini is not a center-right candidate.”
It is a double message that the leader of the League delivers to the prime minister and the rest of the political forces that seem to have opened some cracks around the name of the former president of the Chamber.
While awaiting the proposals of the center-right, the PD-M5S and LEU meet in conclave to fine-tune the strategy.
A new meeting is scheduled but Letta, Conte and Roberto Speranza meanwhile formalize a proposal: a table with all the political forces to come up with a shared candidate.
