Did you know that women of a certain age are more likely to die of a heart attack than men? That women spend longer on average in the intensive care unit? Or that drugs are usually tested on men and the dosage and effect should actually be different for women? “We always talk about equality between men and women in society, which is also necessary. “We have long needed a differentiated treatment of the sexes in medicine,” says Anna Maria Dieplinger, managing director of Upper Austria. State Nursing and Care Centers GmbH and expert in gender medicine.
In the new podcast episode of “healthy & happy” she explains how women and men react differently to illnesses and medications. “Women’s anatomy is just a little different. Hormones influence a lot. That’s why, for example, there are more irritable bowel diseases in women or more house dust allergies,” says the expert.
Other symptoms
Symptoms can also be different, for example with a heart attack: “Women often don’t feel the pain in their chest, but rather it is a general feeling of discomfort; it can be jaw, back or upper abdominal pain,” she says. Therefore, heart attacks in women are recognized later and, on average, they are helped half an hour later than in men.
