Mexican journalist Lourdes Maldonado, who announced that she won a lawsuit against the ex-governor of Baja California, was shot dead near her house in Tijuana. This was reported on January 24 by the local edition of El Sol de Tijuana.
According to preliminary data, when the journalist drove up to her house in a car, she was attacked. The woman was probably shot in the head.
Last week, Maldonado announced that she had won a nine-year labor lawsuit against former Baja California Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdez, whose company, Primer Sistema de Noticias (PSN), she worked for. In addition, Maldonado filed a lawsuit against former State Attorney General Guillermo Ruiz Hernandez, Valdez’s lawyer, for alleged abuse of power and other crimes.
As the publication recalled, in 2019, a journalist at a press conference of the country’s President Andres Manuel López Obrador announced her case against Valdes and stated that she feared for her life. Since 2021, she has been under the protection of the federal government.
Maldonado has become the second journalist to be killed in Baja California in the last week. Earlier, crime journalist Margarito Martinez was shot dead on the threshold of his home in Tijuana. He has collaborated with local and international publications as an author and photographer, focusing on crime in the region.
Prior to that, on November 1, it was reported that photojournalist Alfredo Cardoso died in a hospital in western Mexico. It was noted that the journalist died two days after he was found on a city street with gunshot wounds in the city of the state of Guerrero.
Seven journalists were killed in Mexico in 2021, the highest number in any country in the world.
