Infanta Cristina and Urdangarín announce their separation

The couple married in Barcelona in 1997, after they met at the Atlanta Olympic Games a year earlier, when Undargarín participated as a handball player.

The marriage has four children: Juan Valentín, Pablo, Miguel and Irene.

After the appearance of the photos, Cristina returned to the Palacio de la Zarzuela to see her mother and define the steps to follow. Both must now carry out the separation of assets, although it is known that they had a prenuptial agreement and do not have real estate in common.

The Undargarin situation

The now ex-husband of the Infanta Cristina is still in a complex criminal situation. He was sentenced to six years and three months in prison and to pay a fine of 512,553 euros for crimes of prevarication, embezzlement, fraud, influence peddling and two tax crimes. He served two years in prison until his sentence was reduced. During the first years of the scandal, the Infanta Cristina showed strong support for her husband, unaware of her husband’s activities, an attitude that cost her the title and generated a wave of strong criticism from the Spanish that affected the entire royal family. She took refuge in Switzerland and Undargarín, after serving his sentence, continued his days living in Vitoria.

Now, he has passed to the semi-liberty regimen that reduces visits to the prison to periodic control and must participate in a rehabilitation program for those convicted of economic crimes. If the divorce between the two is formalized, Undargarín will lose his escort and will formally be an ordinary citizen.
