An attack on a university in Germany leaves two dead and three injured

“A young woman died in hospital from her gunshot wounds,” security sources told AFP on Monday afternoon.

The attacker, carrying a long gun, entered the Neuenheimer Feld campus where a course was being taught and fired, visibly aimlessly, Mannheim police spokesman Stefan Wilhelm told AFP.

Four people were injured, including the young woman who later died in hospital.

The author of the attack then went to the outside of the building and “committed suicide,” police said.

The investigators assume that there was only one attacker, so they indicated that “there is no longer a dangerous situation.”

The police reported that they were “not aware of any demand letters”, while asking the population of Germany to avoid speculation.

“My thoughts to the victims and to the people on the scene. Thanks to the intervention forces for their service,” Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said on Twitter.

The shooting generated a large police operation and the authorities called on the population to clear the area around the university to allow the work of rescuers and emergency services.

Located on the north bank of the River Neckar, this campus houses faculties of natural sciences, departments of the university hospital and the botanical garden. The university is the oldest in Germany, having been founded in 1386.

German legislation on the possession of firearms was tightened after two attacks on schools in the city of Erfurt (east), in April 2002, and in the town of Winnenden (southwest) in March 2009.

Germany now has some of the strictest legislation in Europe, which requires anyone under the age of 25 to undergo a psychiatric exam before applying for a gun permit.

In 2016, nine people were killed by David Ali Sonboly who opened fire in a shopping mall in Munich. Another 35 people were injured in that attack, which began at a McDonald’s and ended when the gunman used his Glock 9mm pistol to kill himself.
