A report presented by Girls in Technology, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding possibilities for women in the sector, notes that while there are female presence in 50% of university enrollment Overall, its presence in technological disciplines is a minority.

The study titled “The gap that persists: how many women are missing to achieve gender parity in technology careers in Latin America” analyzes university statistics from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay during the period 2018-2022 as to registrations, registrations and expenses.
Uruguay leads with 42.6% of female participation in careers related to science and technology, followed by Argentina and Colombia, while Peru and Chile present the lowest rates, with 28.9% and 29%, respectively. “The distribution within STEM disciplines is not homogeneous. In all the countries analyzed, women have greater participation in the fields of natural sciences, mathematics and statistics (they even exceed 50% in several countries) than in ICT or engineering, industry and construction,” the report states.

In programming and technological development careers, the gender gap is persistent and widespread throughout the region: in none of them does female participation reach 30%. The data show that although the absolute enrollment of women in technological careers grew in most countries, participation percentages remain relatively stable compared to the number of male students.
“Having new lenses, in this case the intensive categories in programming and technological development that we create from Girls in Technology, allow us understand more precisely the dimension of the gender gap in these disciplines. At the same time, as can be seen in the study, this is not a problem of a single country, but rather a structural challenge we have at the regional level”said Milagros Giménez, CET Research Leader.
In none of these technological categories does female participation reach 30%. It is particularly low in specific programming careers, where it does not exceed 23% in any country.
