Evo Morales’ former anti-drug chief charged with illicit enrichment

Zabala initially requested six months preventive detention for Dávila, who was captured last Saturday night a few meters from the border with Argentina, in the Villazón-La Quiaca region, when he allegedly tried to flee the country, the Sputnik news agency reported.

Dávila’s arrest occurred a few days after local media published that the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) had evidence of links between several former members of the Felcn with drug trafficking.

Dávila held high positions in the police, was pointed out several times as a possible national commander of that force and served as head of the Felcn until the overthrow of Morales in November 2019.

Later he held a regional position and in the last year he had been relegated to the police command, in which he did not have a formal position, according to official reports.

The Minister of Government, Eduardo del Castillo, said on Sunday that he asked the DEA for information to strengthen the investigations into Dávila.

Dávila was mentioned in the DEA reports along with a former local police major, Omar Rojas, who was arrested two weeks ago in Colombia, accused of being the alleged boss of cocaine trafficking from Bolivia.

The DEA, which has not officially operated in Bolivia since 2008 when it was expelled by Morales, is also investigating another former head of the Felcn, Alexander Rojas, brother of Omar.

Another of the strong men in the anti-drug fight of Morales’ first terms who was prosecuted for links to drug trafficking is former General René Zanabria.

In 2011 Zanabria was caught red-handed in Panama with a shipment of cocaine destined for the United States, for which he is currently serving a sentence.
