On Monday, January 24, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a video response to the French newspaper Le Figaro, which in the article “Uncompromising Diplomat” stated that there was not “a hint of a smile” on the face of the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov.
“His stern face, without any hint of a smile, is reminiscent of images from the Cold War,” the newspaper noted.
The publication emphasized that the Russian minister for 18 years in office did not allow himself coquetry, which is consistent with his tough image of “the head of Russian diplomacy who does not seek compromise.”
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that they could not allow the old French publication to be recognized as a deceiver and picked up photographs of “Lavrov who never smiled.” On the selection, the Russian minister sincerely smiles, and sometimes laughs.
The video was posted on her Telegram channel by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, calling this fake Le Figaro the “funniest fake” of the Western media.
Earlier, on January 21, Lavrov jokingly reproached journalists after they did not have time to film his handshake with Swiss President Ignazio Cassis at a meeting in Geneva. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted with a smile that the task of journalists is to catch the moment, and “if it didn’t work out, then it didn’t work out.” Cassis, in turn, laughed at Lavrov’s joke. After that, Lavrov and Cassis shook hands again.
