“We have had a very difficult night and a superhuman evacuation effort is underway on the Attiki Odos,” Oikonomou told Greek television. “We are still in a very difficult phase, since the forecasts indicate that we will have (meteorological) difficulties again in a while“.
As temperatures dropped overnight in Greece hit by an unprecedented snowstorm, soldiers handed out food, water and blankets to drivers, some of whom were stranded in their cars for more than 10 hours. Television images showed the road and vehicles covered in snow.

Greek authorities declared Tuesday a public holiday and closed public offices and private businesses, except supermarkets, pharmacies and gas stations, in the Athens metropolitan area and on some islands.
Some parts of Athens suffered power outages, and the power grid operator said crews were working to restore service.
The storm, named Elpida, is expected to last until Wednesday.
