The death of a Venezuelan migrant who crossed five countries shocks Chile

It is the second fatal victim so far this year, after the death on January 14 of a Peruvian citizen, and at least the 23rd since the massive flow began in February 2021.

After the peak of entries in February 2021, the crisis worsened in October, with hundreds of foreigners wandering through different locations in the north of the country.

In Colchane is the main flow of irregular entry of foreigners.

In that small border community, more than 200 people enter clandestinely every day, most of them Venezuelans, according to municipal authorities.

This irregular entry of immigrants has generated a social and humanitarian crisis in different districts of northern Chile.

The migratory issue had its point of greatest tension at the end of September when in Iquique, a northern coastal city, west of the Atacama desert, an anti-immigrant march was held with 3,000 people in the streets that included verbal and physical attacks on a Venezuelan camp, which they set on fire.

After these events and to prevent the illegal entry of people, the Government of Chile announced the “Colchane Plan”, which consisted of a militarization and police reinforcement of the area, but this plan was listed as a “failure” by Javier Garcia, Mayor of Colchane.

In addition, the Government of Sebastián Piñera announced the construction of several shelters that, according to García, are collapsed.

“The Chilean government has mocked Chileans on migration issues”, said and denounced “lack of attention” on the part of the central government in relation to the humanitarian crisis that they live in the locality.

In the same area of Pisiga Carpa, an improvised camp was erected that accommodates a mass of between 500 and 600 people.

García warned that the migrants are not prepared to face the low night temperatures that affect this area on these dates.

“We can see hundreds of migrants with minors who are in very poor condition, facing the adversity of the climate typical of the highlands at this time,” Garcia said, reported the local media ADN.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned in December that nearly 500 Venezuelan refugees and migrants, including children, cross daily through irregular border crossings between Bolivia and Chile and arrive in the country “after several days without eating, with dehydration, hypothermia and altitude sickness”.

In Chile there are 1.4 million migrants, which is equivalent to 7% of the population.
