Lasso will veto the project that regulates abortion in case of rape

The parliament, in which the ruling party lacks a majority, is scheduled for Tuesday to start the second and final debate on a project to regulate abortion in cases of rape.

A majority report of the legislative commission of justice proposes authorizing the voluntary interruption of pregnancy up to 22 weeks of gestation for those under 18 years of age and a maximum of 20 weeks for those older than that age.

Last April, the Constitutional Court decriminalized abortion in all cases of rape by modifying the law that only allowed if the assault occurs against a woman with a disability or if there is danger to the life of the mother.

The proposal of the Justice commission includes that there will be no need for a complaint, examination or prior declaration of the pregnant woman who decides for an abortion due to rape.

Lasso said that “this bill, if it is approved as it has been known in the media, obviously it will be vetoed by the Executive.”

He added that “Ecuador knows me, I am a person who believes in the defense of life from conception to natural death.”

“I don’t believe in abortion, just as I don’t believe in the death penalty,” emphasized the conservative right-wing president, pointing out that although he “definitely” does not share the determination of the Constitutional Court, his “republican attitude” “forces” him to respect the decision of the magistrates.

In Ecuador, the law provides that a woman who interrupts her pregnancy for reasons other than those permitted is punished with up to two years in prison.
