United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday, January 25, said he did not rule out the imposition of personal sanctions against Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the event of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This is reported by Reuters.
“Yes,” the head of the White House answered the question of journalists about whether he considers it possible to impose sanctions personally against the President of the Russian Federation in the event of an invasion of Russian forces into Ukraine.
Biden reiterated that he had no plans to send U.S. troops to Ukraine and noted that a Russian invasion would have “enormous consequences.”
The day before, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there are a lot of rumors and unreliable data that are “information hysteria” about the situation in Ukraine and the allegedly planned attack by Russia. He stressed that the actions of Washington and NATO lead to an escalation of tension in Ukraine. Peskov also pointed out that the actions of the Kiev authorities indicate preparations for an offensive in the Donbass, such a situation cannot but worry Russia. The head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, also announced the preparation of Kiev for an offensive in the Donbass.
In the Western media, articles have repeatedly appeared about the allegedly possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Against this background, American lawmakers are calling for tougher sanctions against Moscow. On January 15, United States Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland announced that Washington had prepared 18 different scenarios for restrictive measures in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, the details of which she refused to disclose.
Russia has repeatedly rejected reports of an alleged possible invasion of Ukraine. On January 10, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted that Moscow had no intentions to attack Ukraine and could not have it.
