Gymnastics Olympic champion Csollany died of Corona

The top gymnast became Olympic champion on the rings in Sydney in 2000. Two years later he won the world championship title on the same device in Debrecen, Hungary. Before that he had won five world championship silver medals and one European title in his career.

Last November, Csollany, who lived in the western Hungarian town of Sopron, fell ill with Covid-19. In early December, his condition deteriorated so much that he was taken to a hospital in Budapest. He was in intensive care and connected to an artificial lung.

Last summer, Csollany made people sit up and take notice with skeptical statements. However, the corresponding entries on his Facebook page have since been deleted. Most recently, however, according to doctors close to him, he had been vaccinated with the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. However, the time is said to have been too close to his infection, so that the vaccination was not yet able to develop its full effect.

Csollany was most recently hired as head coach at Union Eisenstadt, where he started a year ago. “A year ago we were overjoyed that the Olympic champion from Sydney, world champion from 2002 and European champion from 1998, Szilveszter Csollany, started training with our gymnasts. He worked with us until mid-November, until he contracted Corona ill. At the beginning of December he was already in the hospital. The sad news came last night, “said the club in a statement.
