The organizers called for dozens of public gatherings in more than 28 points throughout Mexico, with 125 million inhabitants, where the cry of “not one more” was heard in many of them. There were also virtual protests with the labels #NiSilencioNiOlvido; #NoSeMataLaVerdad and #JournalismAtRisk.
In Mexico, 147 communicators have been murdered between 2000-2022 in cases possibly related to his work, according to the Article 19 organization, which condemned last week the most recent events that occurred in the border city of Tijuana, in the state of Baja California, and in the state of Veracruz.
“Efforts must be redoubled to protect journalists and human rights defenders and put an end to impunity for these crimes,” said UN Mexico, after the crimes of journalists José Luis Gamboa, Lourdes Maldonado and Margarito Martínez.
Maldonado, 68, died Sunday after being shot in the head at the door of his house in Tijuana, three years after he publicly asked the president himself Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador protection because he feared for his life. The attack occurred less than a week after the death of his colleague in Tijuana, Martínez.
The president said Tuesday that Maldonado’s case will be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice and the punishment of those responsible. During the administration of AMLO, an acronym by which the president is known, 28 communicators have died violently.
However, his critics affirm that under his management he has failed to fulfill his electoral promises to reduce crime and the widespread violence that has plagued Mexico for years, associated with organized crime, as well as to abolish impunity.
“This is a cunning blow to democracy. We are calling on society, the three branches of government and various sectors to react,” Israel Ibarra, president of the Baja California College of Communicators, told Reuters by telephone.
“It’s not just the murder of Lourdes and Margarito in Tijuana, it’s the murder of freedom of expression in Mexico,” he added as he walked among hundreds of people and journalists at a march in Tijuana.
