Former President Horacio Cartes is denounced for illicit enrichment and money laundering

According to the minister, the investigation showed that Cartes had an “excessive growth in assets” between 2013 and 2018, a period that coincides with his role as president.

“A sum of 300 million dollars more or less was found,” he specified, adding that there is talk of a false statement since the former president made several corrections to his affidavits.

Likewise, he indicated that there are companies related to Cartes, such as Tabacalera del Este (Tabesa), investigated at the international level.

Meanwhile, the head of Seprelad, Carlos Arregui, stated that Giuzzio “asks for a series of things that have to do with international bodies. Seprelad is in charge of that,” reported the Paraguayan portal ABC.

From now on, it will be Seprelad that conducts research with peer organizations from other countries.

Asked about the possible reason why Giuzzio filed the complaint with Seprelad and not with the Public Ministry, headed by Sandra Quiñónez since Cartes’ mandate, Arregui referred to the speed of the results.

“We are part of a secure international network. There are proceedings that must be exhausted, we work with the Prosecutor’s Office. We have already had records and faster results than prosecutors, “he assessed.

“We are authorized to make a number of orders, especially in the international context. We work with secure couriers and an international network. There is information collected (about Cartes) from other similar units in other countries”, explained the head of Seprelad.

Regarding the possible work with the Prosecutor’s Office, he maintained that once the corresponding procedures have been carried out, they will analyze if they are sent to the Public Ministry.

“The prosecutors have used intelligence reports from Seprelad. We are going to carry out a series of procedures that are our responsibility, then we are going to see if we send them to the Public Ministry”, he concluded.
