Russia gets answers from US and NATO on its security demands

“We have made it clear that there are basic principles that we are determined to uphold and uphold, including sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and the right of states to choose their own security arrangements and alliances,” the US secretary of state told reporters.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) He also delivered his written response to the demands made by Russia on Wednesday, a source from the organization pointed out.

“NATO has delivered its proposals to Russia this afternoon” (Wednesday), an official from the military alliance said.

Diplomatic sources told AFP that the document had been delivered to the Russian ambassador in Belgium.

In Moscow, the Russian government announced that it had received a separate written response from the United States, via US Ambassador John Sullivan.

Russia had presented in December the drafts of proposed treaties to NATO and the United States on security matters and the withdrawal of the military presence from the vicinity of the Russian border.

Those demands came at a time of heightened tension on the Russia-Ukraine border, where Russian forces concentrated a huge military capacity, fueling fears of an invasion of Ukrainian territory.

Russia seeks guarantees that Ukraine will not be accepted into NATO, and that the military alliance will push back its forces installed on the Eastern flank of Europe.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has already said the military alliance is willing to discuss security issues with Russia but insists it will not make concessions to its “basic principles.”
