“I have an Austrian spirit, I am a fundamentalist and a devout anarchist and I am inside the State to break everything,” said the Argentine president, opening his agenda in Rome

“Argentina, one of the richest countries in the world, entered into crisis, the result of a delusional economic system, with messianic and criminal politicians, until a libertarian president like me arrived”: the president Javier Milei He thus opened his trip to Italy with an event at the Palazzo Wedekind, historic headquarters of the conservative Roman newspaper “Il Tempo”, where He was awarded the 2024 Milton Friedman International Prize for being the first libertarian president in history.

“I thank you for this award and, given his name, it seems right to talk about Friedman’s academic contribution, who played a fundamental role in the path to freedom,” said Milei when withdrawing the recognition for being the first head of state to incarnate liberal ideas and after a speech on economic theories in front of a room full of young libertarians who applauded him.

In his speech, the President defined himself as having an “Austrian, fundamentalist and devout anarchist spirit,” who called Argentine politicians messianic and criminal, stating that “I am inside the State to break everything.”

“I am an anarchist and I despise the State,” with these statements Milei gave a speech dedicated to the economist Milton Friedman of whom he is a follower: “Keynes was evil, long live damn freedom!” He concluded his speech and only at the end suddenly raised the pitch of his voice, breaking out into the famous battle cry at the ceremony promoted by the Milton Friedman Institute, the libertarian student organization Students for Liberty Italia, and the newspaper Il Tempo.

Milei-Meloni, meeting between smiles and Mercosur

Javier Milei drinks two coffees and a Coca-Cola after receiving his award and before meeting Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi and receiving Italian citizenship with his sister Karina.

“How are you, friend?” Javier Milei greeted Meloni and then hugged her upon entering the Italian government house in the rain and meeting the Premier again after a couple of weeks of having seen the Premier in Buenos Aires.

A meeting between friends, very pleasant and with a lot of harmony, is described today by the Italian media. For the government of Rome it is important to strengthen ties with Buenos Aires and it is also a commercial issue.

On the one hand, Italy wants to secure exports in South America, while Trump’s election makes the imposition of new tariffs likely. On the other hand, however, there are internal conflicts in the Meloni Executive over the possibility of ratifying the agreement to suppress the rights of the European Union with Mercosur, feared by the Italian farmers who are blocking the agreement and where Milei aims to convince to the Premier since the pact is very important for Argentina and where the president would have asked Meloni to negotiate the agreement.
