For China, US aid affects its “security interests”
The White House, in the last month of Democrat Joe Biden’s presidency, on Friday authorized a disbursement of $571 million in military “items and services” to provide assistance to Taiwan.
In September, the Democratic president had already approved aid of 567 million dollars for this island that, although it barely enjoys international recognition, has a government, army and its own currency.

The new aid “contradicts the commitments of the” American leaders not to support “Taiwan independence,” reacted the spokesperson for the Chinese government’s Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhu Fenglian.
“We ask that the United States immediately stop arming Taiwan and handle the Taiwan issue with the greatest possible caution,” he declared on public television CCTV.
Although the United States recognizes the government of Beijing and does not formally maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it has been the island’s main ally and arms supplier for decades.
In recent years, China has increased military and political pressure on Taiwan and routinely sends army planes and ships or conducts large maneuvers in its surroundings.
