Negotiations on ending the armed conflict between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on the border of the two countries broke down due to the continuation of the shooting. This is reported by the Kyrgyz border service.
“On January 27, 2022, the fire between the servicemen of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan ceased for 10 minutes. It was planned that during the ceasefire, Abdikarim Alimbaev, the plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Batken region, would meet with the governor of the Sughd region of Tajikistan, as well as border representatives of the parties,” the publication says.
However, negotiations were disrupted due to continued skirmishes.
Earlier that day, shooting took place in the Tort-Kocho area of the Batken region. The border guards of Kyrgyzstan were transferred to a reinforced version of the service due to tension on the border with Tajikistan. The Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Stanislav Zas called on both sides for an immediate ceasefire.
The Kyrgyz side stated that the Tajik side, for unknown reasons, blocked the Osh-Batken-Isfana road, which caused the situation on the border to worsen. Representatives of law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene and called for a peaceful settlement of the issue. However, a few minutes after the conclusion of the negotiations, a firefight ensued.
In April 2021, the situation on the border of the republics also escalated. Then there was a shootout between the military personnel of the two countries. It was preceded by a conflict between local residents in the area of the Headwater distribution point, the ownership of which is disputed by both sides.
