This ancient Greek poem is one of the founding texts of Western literature. It tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the fight against divine will. The story includes iconic episodes such as his encounters with the cyclops Polyphemus, the mermaids and the witch goddess Circe, which culminate with his reunion with his wife, Penelope.
While this would be a notable adaptation of the text, the poem has previously served as source material for, among many other works, the Italian film Ulysses from 1954, directed by Mario Camerini and starring Kirk Douglasas well as the 1997 miniseries The Odysseydirected by Andrei Konchalovsky and starring Armand Assante. Currently, you can see Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche playing Odysseus and Penelope in The return of Uberto Pasoliniwhich Bleecker Street released earlier this month following the film’s presentation at TIFF.

The Odyssey is expected to begin filming early next year. This is Nolan’s second film for Universal, following his best picture winner Oppenheimerand its release date in 2026 coincides with the deadline usually reserved by the filmmaker, as was the case with his historical drama starring Cillian Murphy.
