Neil Young retired from Glastonbury Festival this year, blaming “corporate control” of the BBC for its decision.

The musician said that he and his band, Chrome Heartswill not be performing at the famous UK music event in June.

“Chrome Hearts and I were looking forward to playing Glastonbury, one of my favorite outdoor concerts of all time,” Young wrote on his website. “We were told that the BBC was now a partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do a lot of things in a way that we were not interested in”.

“It looks like Glastonbury is now under corporate control and it’s not like I remembered… We won’t be playing Glastonbury on this tour because it’s a place that corporations don’t like and for me it’s not like it used to be.. I hope to see you at one of the other tour venues.”

Young had not been officially announced as part of the lineup, but he had performed at the festival before, headlining the Pyramid stage in 2009.

So far, the only act officially confirmed for this year’s event, which will take place June 25-29, is Rod Stewartwho will play the role of the “tea time legend.”

The partnership between BBC and Glastonbury

The BBC has been a partner of Glastonbury since 1997when it took over the broadcast of the festival from Channel 4. Its coverage has grown exponentially since then and is available on its television networks, radio stations, website and iPlayer streaming platform. The publicly funded corporation is often criticized for the number of staff it sends (reportedly in the hundreds) to cover the five-day event.

Tickets for this year’s festival sold out in 32 minutes, according to reports.
