The seventh round of voting is planned for Saturday morning (9.30 a.m.). The parties are expected to agree on a cross-camp candidate by Saturday. The non-party Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia and Prime Minister Mario Draghi come into question. Lega boss Matteo Salvini is leading negotiations for the search for a new president. If the seventh round of voting ends without a result, another will follow on Saturday afternoon.
First big test of strength on Friday
Contrary to the commitments of the past few days to a joint cross-party proposal, the centre-right block put forward its own candidate with Senate President Elisabetta Casellati. The center-left reacted with outrage at the advance and rejected the 75-year-old confidante of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The result of what is now the fifth vote was therefore no surprise: the politician from the right-wing conservative Forza Italia missed the necessary majority of 505 votes with 382 votes.
In the evening, the 1,009 members of parliament and senators made another attempt to find a successor to President Sergio Mattarella.
