Pupils from the 4th HLKA and the 5th HLKB of the HLW Freistadt worked as young researchers. And with great success: For their participation in the “wettermelden.at” project, they took second place in the “Citizen Science Awards 2022” and can now look forward to prize money of 750 euros.
Under the professional supervision of their professor Gudrun Heinzelreiter-Wallner, the twelve students recorded weather phenomena throughout Austria and provided valuable information. The two CPR classes collected data on the weather events and reported their observations on a dedicated platform. Weather hazards and their effects could and can be recorded in real time and extreme weather events and their damage can be better researched climatologically. Among other things, the findings flow into studies that deal with the influence of extreme weather on the ground or analyze the consequences of storms, avalanches, hail or mudslides on the immediate environment.
