Warnings apply to around 60 million residents in more than a dozen states, US media reported, citing meteorologists. They spoke of a “brutal winter storm” that hit parts of the Midwest over the weekend and is now extending to the East Coast.
Warnings also apply to the capital Washington, where Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election is due to be confirmed in the US Congress today. It has been cold there in the past few days, but dry. In the morning people woke up in a snow-covered city. In view of the warnings, some had already stocked up on canned goods days ago, as was seen in supermarkets over the weekend. The National Weather Service says snow could reach up to 40 centimeters in remote areas. Federal authorities remain closed.
Obstructions on roads and airports
Police reported hundreds of car accidents on slippery roads across the country, and many drivers were stuck in their cars in driving snow. “Please, please, please, stay home! This is not the time to look at the scenery,” warned a highway patrol officer in Kansas – and posted pictures of broken down trucks and snow-blown highways.
