Salt machines and snow plows were ready to be mobilized in New York, whose Mayor Eric Adams tweeted that about a foot of snow was expected, though “Mother Nature has a tendency to do what she wants.”
Some 3,400 flights, both domestic and international, were suspended as of Saturday in the United States, according to flight tracker FlightAware. On Friday, cancellations reached more than 1,450.
The National Metereological Service warned of “low visibility conditions” what would they do “almost impossible to travel” in large parts of the northeastern coast of the United States, with accumulations of snow greater than 30 centimeters in parts of that region.
The governors of New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared a snow emergency.
The storm will bring extremely cold temperatures with dangerous gusts of wind between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the weather service said.
“Go home carefully tonight, stay home for the weekend, avoid any unnecessary travel.”New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement, pointing to especially heavy snowfall on Long Island, New York City and the lower Hudson Valley.
The region’s weather service said the storm would rapidly intensify over the next 24 hours and pressure could drop to 35 millibars by Saturday night.
This storm comes after a similar winter storm two weeks ago that whitened much of eastern North America, from Georgia to Canada, leaving many homes without power and disrupting thousands of air connections.
