In addition to President Emmanuel Macron and several ministers, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is also taking part in the commemoration. A total of 17 people were killed in the attack on the magazine as well as attacks on a policewoman and on a kosher supermarket in the days that followed.

The attack on “Charlie Hebdo” alone, in which two brothers opened fire in the editorial office and caused a bloodbath, killed twelve people, including several of France’s best-known cartoonists. The paper, which is known for its blasphemous provocations, had previously distributed cartoons of Mohammed. The three perpetrators were shot dead by security forces.
