In the APA/OGM trust index, the FPÖ leader has always occupied one of the lowest places. While the trust ratings of the Chancellors usually extend beyond their own core electorate, Kickl is met with widespread mistrust outside of the liberal supporters. When it came to the chancellor issue, Kickl was recently ahead of the competition.
For the trust index, OGM has been asking several times a year since 2003 how many Austrians trust individual federal politicians and how many do not. In the last survey before the National Council election in August, 27 percent of those eligible to vote said they trusted the FPÖ chairman. This roughly corresponds to the result of the Freedom Party in the National Council election (28.8 percent). However, 69 percent of the population did not trust Kickl. In total, this resulted in a negative trust balance of minus 42 points.
“Very little trust outside of his electorate”
“Kickl enjoys an extremely high level of trust among his own electorate and very little among other groups,” said OGM data specialist Johannes Klotz, summing up the FPÖ leader’s poll numbers at the time. For comparison: Before the election, ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer had a negative trust balance of minus 22 points (with 38 percent trust and 60 percent distrust), SPÖ leader Andreas Babler had a negative trust balance of minus 29 points (with 27 percent trust and 56 percent distrust). ).
