Storm warning for Upper Austria: Now it’s getting really uncomfortable

The storm was already raging on Saturday afternoon at up to 120 km/h – measured on the Feuerkogel plateau – in the mountains of Upper Austria. The wind will pick up again on Saturday evening. Wind peaks of 71 km/h, measured at 6 p.m. in Wolfsegg, were already registered in the early evening.

ZAMG has issued a storm warning for the coming night and Sunday. It applies to the entire state. It is widespread, but heavy gusts of wind are to be expected, especially in the foothills of the Alps and on the mountains. Meteorologists also expect gusts of between 60 and 90 km/h in the valleys and lowlands. In the mountains, the storm can reach hurricane force. That means peak values ​​of more than 130 km/h.

Be careful on the road

The experts warn to be particularly careful in forests and parks, as falling branches are to be expected. Motorists are advised to reduce their speed, avoid overtaking and keep a sufficient distance, especially on bridges and exposed streets. Snowdrifts and poor visibility can also be expected at higher altitudes. Power failures and obstructions in road and rail traffic cannot be ruled out due to fallen trees.

Rain comes with the storm. Rain will set in from the north-west before midnight on Saturday and will spread rapidly across the country. Snow falls first above 900 to 1100 meters. By morning the snow line had dropped to 500 meters in the Mühlviertel and around 900 meters in the Salzkammergut.

Snowstorm at the start of the week

On Sunday, dry weather will prevail from the north in the course of the morning, the clouds will loosen up. But the wind continued to blow stormy with peaks of up to 80 km/h. In the southern parts of the country it is still raining or snowing into the afternoon with a snow line of around 700 meters. Larger amounts of fresh snow are to be expected in the classic northern areas, and the risk of avalanches is likely to increase.

The start of the week will also be uncomfortable. In the morning heavy rain or snowfall will set in from the north-west. The snow line is between 400 and 700 meters. Especially in the Mühlviertel in the southern parts of the country, the precipitation is intense. In addition, strong winds are blowing from the west with peaks of up to 70 km/h. There is no improvement in the weather in sight for the time being. From today’s perspective, Tuesday and Wednesday are also likely to be stormy and unstable.
