Italian President Mattarella re-elected for a second term

Sergio Mattarella received 759 votes from the required 505 during the presidential elections in Italy. Despite the fact that the votes are still being counted, the current Italian leader has already been re-elected for a second term, writes on Saturday, January 29, La Repubblica.

The publication recalled that seven years ago, Mattarella was elected on Saturday, January 31, 2015, with 665 votes.

This year, on Saturday, the eighth round of voting took place, which showed the unconditional advantage of the incumbent president. In the first round on January 24 last year, the head of state received 16 votes, in the second – 39, in the third – 125, in the fourth – 166. In the fifth vote, 46 people voted for Mattarella, and in the sixth – 336. In the seventh, he received 387 votes. The eighth round was the final one, showing the advantage of the current head of the country over his rivals.

Mattarella, 80, who has repeatedly said he has no plans to run for a second term, has already rented a house in Rome’s Pinciano quarter, where he plans to move after the end of his first term. Now he would have to linger on the Quirinal Hill.

Mattarella’s candidacy was nominated for a second term after the appeal of leading politicians and heads of regions.

Sergio Mattarella was born in Palermo in 1941. He began his political career in the 1980s in the ranks of the Christian Democratic Party. The law graduate turned to politics after his brother Piersanti Mattarella, the governor of Sicily, was assassinated in 1980 by order of the mafia.

In 1983, Mattarella was elected to parliament for the first time. In 2011, he was elected as a judge of the Constitutional Court. In 2015 he became the 12th President of Italy.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi withdrew his candidacy from the presidential elections on January 22. During a meeting with the leaders of the center-right parties “League” and “Brothers of Italy”, he proposed to nominate a single “worthy” candidate, without naming names.

Earlier, on December 23, 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that good and stable relations have developed between Russia and Italy, which are of a non-partisan nature. According to him, Italy is a country of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) and a member of the European Union, which does not prevent the countries from working together.
