The city of Linz operates six temperature measuring stations, and there is another one from Geosphere Austria. The Linz city climatologist Johannes Horak has now finally evaluated the data collected from 2024 – the already expected result is now here: The year 2024 was the hottest year so far for Linz, and in some cases significantly.

Based on the average for the years 1981 to 2010, eleven of the twelve months in 2024 were hotter – in some cases significantly. For example, February was more than six degrees warmer, March and August were each more than four degrees warmer. Except for November, which was marginally colder than average, all months were at least 1.5 degrees warmer.
Tree offensive in Bürgerstrasse
“We have to rebuild our city in a climate-friendly way so that our children can grow up in a livable and lovable Linz,” says Climate City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens). “This can only be achieved if we tackle the major challenges together now, and we have laid important foundations for this in Linz in terms of climate protection and climate adaptation.”
Schobesberger cites the tree offensive as one of the most important means of preventing the city from heating up further: This should be continued after the Kroatengasse, the town hall district and the first part of the Neustadtviertel. The greening of Bürgerstrasse is scheduled to start this year, followed by the Andreas Hofer district. As a result, in addition to Wiener Straße between Unionkreuzung and Bulgariplatz, Brucknerstraße, Dürrnbergerstraße and Hasnerstraße as well as individual locations will be examined for potential for tree planting. Further steps include the greening of the main square (jury meeting for the redesign has been underway since yesterday) and Martin-Luther-Platz. The city center concept should also take greenery and attractiveness into account.
