Irish Foreign and Defense Minister Simon Coveney welcomed Moscow’s decision to relocate Russian Navy exercises in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, he wrote in Twitter on Saturday, January 29, after receiving notification from the Russian side.

“This week I wrote to my colleague, the Russian Defense Minister, asking him to reconsider the conduct of naval exercises off the coast of Ireland. I received a letter tonight confirming that Russian exercises will be moved outside the Irish Special Economic Zone. I welcome this decision, ”the message says.

Earlier on Saturday, Russian Ambassador to Dublin Yuri Filatov said that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had decided to relocate naval exercises outside of Ireland’s exclusive economic zone. The diplomat noted that the decision was made in response to requests from the Irish government and appeals from the association of southern and western fish producers in Ireland.

On January 20, it became known that more than 140 ships and 60 aircraft will participate in the exercises of the Russian Navy in January-February in all areas of responsibility of the fleets. In addition, it is planned to involve about 10 thousand military personnel in the exercises. A number of exercises will take place in the sea areas adjacent to the territory of Russia. In addition to the Atlantic Ocean, exercises will be conducted in the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Okhotsk, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
