King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia said goodbye in the port of Cádiz.

With the training ship “Juan Sebastián El Cano” she will sail two oceans in the next five months.

No extra sausages for the princess

According to the royal family, Leonor will not enjoy any royal favors on board. She will share a small cabin with two colleagues, sleep in a bunk and use shared toilets. And she will have to lend a hand. However, the young woman demonstrated courage and physical fitness even before setting off from Cádiz when she easily climbed up the rigging of an almost 50 meter high mast using a safety line.

The heir to the throne and another 75 officer candidates will travel a total of 17,000 nautical miles on the ship and, after two stops in the Canary Islands, will call at ports in South, Central and North America. The program includes stages such as Salvador in Brazil, El Callao in Peru, Cartagena de Indias in Colombia and, at the end, New York. The sailing ship returns to Spain on July 14th. Leonor will fly back to Spain in June after the last leg from the US east coast.

Many tears were shed

Felipe (56) and Letizia (52) said goodbye to their eldest daughter. In the live broadcast on the TV channel RTVE it was seen that the Queen was “very moved”, as a reporter said. As they set sail, Leonor and other officer candidates in naval uniforms waved their hats with smiles, while Felipe, Letizia, other members of the crew and hundreds of onlookers sent kisses ashore. There were also many tears.
