The zoo is thus taking another important step in species protection. “With their arrival, we are continuing our commitment to the ‘Vietnamazing’ campaign, which draws attention to the protection of highly endangered species in Vietnam,” reported zoo director Andreas Artmann in a press release on Monday.
The Vietnamese crocodile newt (Tylototriton vietnamensis) relies on forested areas. The destruction of the habitat through deforestation for agriculture and mining threatens the survival of the species, as does the pet trade or the collection of animals for traditional medicine. Since 2016, thanks to intensive conservation breeding measures, it has been possible to downgrade the species from “endangered” to “endangered”. The Aquazoo will actively participate in the conservation breeding of crocodile newts in order to secure the long-term population of this endangered species and to support their reintroduction into the wild.
